Pure Aqua RO Systems
Reverse osmosis is a pressure driven process that forces water through a semi-permeable membrane that only passes the solvent (or water). The solute or larger molecules are concentrated and flushed out in the reject stream. RO removes approximately 99+% of dissolved salts in water.
To understand the concept of reverse osmosis, recall the process of osmosis. Everything in nature wants to reach equilibrium. If there were two bodies of water separated by a semi-permeable membrane with different salt concentrations, they will reach equilibrium through osmosis; the solvent or water moves naturally through the membrane from the low salt concentration side to the high salt concentration side to balance (put in equilibrium) the concentration. Multi-media water filter systems are ideally suited for use where stringent water quality standards are required or where higher levels of suspended solids are present. These applications can include re-use applications, water pre-treatment applications for reverse osmosis and deionization systems or as a pre-treatment system prior to disposable bag or cartridge filters.
Multi-media filters remove suspended particles from water and are primarily suited for feed water turbidity of up to 20 NTU. In the filtration process, large particulate matter is captured in the top of the filter bed. The Desalination industry is relatively small; however it is a growing market. While water is plentiful, over 97% is too salty for human consumption. Desalination companies utilize the unlimited supply of seawater and through Reverse Osmosis or distillation, create potable water by removing the salts.
Desalination systems consist of seawater intake (open or beach well), pre-treatment filters (screen and multimedia filters), Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes and chemical dosing systems. The process of Reverse Osmosis requires significant feed pressure depending on the ocean (specific TDS) and temperature. The feed pressure ranges from 700-900 PSI. Antiscalant chemicals are used to prevent the scaling & fouling of the RO membranes. Scale may consist of mineral fouling such as calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate, barium sulfate, silica, calcium fluoride, and strontium sulfate. The Antiscalant dosing should be done before reaching the RO membranes to break up sulfate precipitates, calcium carbonate, and other mineral fouling.
Antiscalant chemical is used to process very poor quality feed water at very high rates of recovery. When used properly, Antiscalant extends the time between membrane cleanings from a few weeks to years in some cases. Pure Aqua Water Softening Systems
Water softening is a key step in treating hard or raw water. Without this step, minerals and materials in raw water such as calcium, magnesium and various others can build up to damage the water treatment equipment; specifically the membranes used to clean water. Removal of these materials can be achieved by ion exchange.
This process involves calcium and magnesium ions being switched for sodium or potassium ions. Inside the softener, an ion exchange material, such as a bed of small, plastic resin beads or zeolite, is saturated with sodium or potassium chloride. The material draws in calcium and magnesium, which displace the sodium or potassium into the water. When the material is completely covered through exchange, a solution washes away the removed minerals and replaces the regenerate ions before the tank is rinsed with fresh water.
